The Greek Myth About Soulmates (And My Thoughts On It)

Greek mythology is my favorite kind of mythology. The tales are so wild and amazing. Have you heard about the Greek myth for a soulmate?

As Plato, a famous greek theatre and comedy writer puts it,
“According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.”
Let me explain the story to you in detail.

At the start of the time, humans were one. Literally one. Instead of two arms, they had four arms (*enters ben 10*), they had four legs, and two faces. It must have been cool. I believe they must be very fast and strong. And doing stuff like cartwheel must be easy.

Anyway, the Gods of Olympus of Olympus didn't like the powers of humans. Humans were proud and confident. They were so mighty and strong, so the gods feared that the humans will overthrow them. Zeus, the god of the sky, lightning, and the thunder, and ruler of all the gods on Mount Olympus saw two paths in front of him.

The first one was that he could just end the human race. You know, no humans, no overthrowing! But then there was a little problem. If there were no humans, who would worship an glorify the gods? So, he went over to the alternative option.

He decided to zap his godly finger and split the humans in half. (Because that's what you do when you have a problem with someonešŸ¤·) Not only this would cause the humans endless pain and suffering, but it would also double the population of humans. That meant more worshippers and more tributes for the gods. It was a win-win situation for the gods.

So, while the gods were celebrating and thriving, the humans were crying over in pain. They tried hugging their other half (which must have been a new concept for them) in the hope that they'll stitch them back together. As days went by, the humans were in complete mystery and depression. They stopped eating or drinking, not caring if they die.

Luckily Apollo, god of light, healing, music, and prophecy (and my personal favorite god) couldn't handle to see them like this. So, he sewed them up and reformed their body, just leaving the navel, as a reminder to their original form.

Now people spend their lives finding their soulmate or their 'other half.' Many people claim that they find their soulmate. They describe the feeling as 'magical' and truly beautiful.

okay, so here's where it gets exciting. This is NOT a part of the myth. I'm no philosopher, this is just my personal belief. You can think of it as a storyline.

I think that when a person would meet their soulmate, they would combine again and become super powerful. Powerful enough to overthrow Zeus. Zeus knew this, and that is why he cursed the humans that they'll never be able to find their soulmate again.

What do you think?

Anyway, this myth is one of my favorite myths in Greek Mythology. What's your favorite myth?
